Royal Air Force Ludford Magna opened as a heavy bomber station in 1943. It was a bleak windswept site high on the Lincolnshire Wolds and for the duration of the war it housed No. 101 Squadron. This was a Special Duties Squadron whose task was radio counter-measures and special equipment was carried in their Lancaster bombers.

With almost continuous cold winds and heavy rain there were very few home comforts for the crews or ground staff. About the late spring of 1944 a half-breed retriever-Shetland sheepdog, could be seen around the billet site of the station. Then the dog gained the approval of Air Commodore Fielding and Group Captain King, for the way he bullied and herded the fowls and geese, bought by the senior officers to fatten up for Christmas.

He became a favourite with the ground crews and they named him 'Bobby'. The dog was mostly black with flashes of white on lower legs and muzzle. The dog was keen, fit and very intelligent ... and it loved all the fuss.

Then one day Bobby suddenly latched on to an aircrew and from then on, aircrew and dog were inseparable. Mess for dinner, and no waiting outside for Bobby, then down to the Black Horse Inn at Ludford or the White Swan for a saucer or two of ale.

The only place he did not accompany them was the Briefing Room. But, he was always waiting for his beloved crew outside, and was always with them in the crew bus, out to their aircraft on the dispersal pan. Once there, Bobby would make straight for the trailing wheel and urinate.
