Many stories lie dormant in the mind and are triggered by some unexplained event; a tune, a picture or, in the case of Stuart Chapman, a book or should I say books, to be more correct. I will let him explain in his own words:

"Reading Military Airfields of Yorkshire and the Ghost Stations™ series, I was reminded of my days as a National Serviceman in the Royal Signals during 1948-50; following Basic and Trade Training at Catterick I was posted to the former RAF Bomber Station Pocklington, then known as No.2 Depot Regiment Royal Signals, later becoming The Depot Regiment Royal Signals.

"Then, in August 1948 the airfield was in a reasonable state, the main landing strip and perimeter track being in good condition. The control tower was located on the far side of the field, close to the village of Barmby Moor; on the B 1246 road and I remember a 'J' type hangar near to the Admin Block on the opposite side of the field.

"At that time Royal Signals personnel volunteering for parachute training, would assemble at Pocklington for primary physical and parachute training, prior to jumping and qualifying for parachute wings at Aldershot, the perimeter track was used by them for endurance running and speed marching, whilst the main runway being utilised for the dangerous practise of rolling from the tailboard of a moving truck whilst attached to an open parachute to simulate the effect of landing. This was later banned due to the number of injuries sustained.

"The main runway also made an ideal pitch for many games of fast and furious army hockey. Apart from this the only exciting period was during the summer of 1949 when a Spitfire made a forced landing on the ...
