Devil's Hill Field

GHOST STATIONS™ Lincolnshire ... True Ghost Stories by Bruce Barrymore Halpenny

The county of Lincolnshire became the last resting place for many aircraft and crew during the Second World War.

Flying accidents were a daily occurrence and, with the mushrooming of heavy-bomber airfields that sprouted almost overnight in order to meet the demand of RAF Bomber Command, there was a serious problem with overlapping of circuits.

Many crashes were caused by tired crews returning from bombing raids only to find their airfield covered in fog. Battle weary and battle scarred ... they plunged to earth.

One such doomed bomber was Lancaster R5894. It was trying to land at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire on Tuesday 2 March 1944 but their luck ran out. It was a bad crash and the truth has never been told until now.

The official report stated one survivor. But that was not true. There were no survivors.

Another report said that all crew were killed on impact; but that is also not true, as I will prove in a minute.

In Sid Finn's Lincolnshire crash book he states that Lancaster R5894 crashed behind Riseholme Hall; but that is not true; old Sid has got that wrong for it crashed in Devil's Hill Field which, is today haunted by a ghost flyer; and, as the story unfolds, you will understand the reason why it is haunted.

The heavy four-engined Lancaster bomber was on final count down for landing at RAF Scampton ... The rest of this story along with other interesting, chilling and thought provoking true stories can be found in the book Ghost Stations™ Lincolnshire
