In 1975 Dave Sutton joined the Royal Air Force and after his training he was posted to RAF Waddington near Lincoln. As a clerk, he was assigned to the general registry in Station Headquarters - SHQ; and one of the duties involved being Duty Clerk about once every four to six weeks.

This entailed spending the night in the Station Headquarters to deal with emergency travel warrants and other admin matters.

One other duty was to lock and secure the Station Headquarters, and check all cabinets containing classified material, and sign as to have done so on the appropriate sheet. This was supposed to be done at regular times but most duty clerks did it all in the morning just before going off shift.

To carry out his duties the Duty Clerk had a small room on the top floor of Station Headquarters, which was equipped with a bed, telephone, television and radio.

The duty shift was from 1700 hours to 0800 hours the following morning. If the Duty Clerk went to the Mess, the Guardroom was informed so that they knew where to contact him. The Station Headquarters dates back to the 1930s, the station itself opened in November 1916, as a flying training station, and it remained in that role for the duration of the war.

Waddington was one of the few stations to retain its buildings and airfield during the run down immediately after the war. A rebuilding programme started in the 1930s as the war clouds gathered yet again ...
