The Ghosts Of RAF Binbrook

GHOST STATIONS™ 2 ... True Ghost Stories by Bruce Barrymore Halpenny

RAF Binbrook is perched on top of the Lincolnshire Wolds overlooking the village of Binbrook. The airfield opened in June 1940 in No. 1 Group, Bomber Command. It was a front-line bomber station throughout the war; and it housed Numbers: 12, and 142 Squadrons and 460 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force.

There were many losses from the station and one big disaster was on the evening of 3 July 1943, when an electrical short circuit on Lancaster DV172 caused the entire bomb load to drop to the ground. Within minutes the 4,000-lb ‘Cookie’ and two 500-pounders exploded and the bomber disintegrated.

Night after night the bombers took off and many times on their return the tired crews had to contend with fog. One such night was on 17 December when four aircraft from 460 Squadron crashed after returning from a raid on Berlin. One crashed just short of the runway.

After the war the airfield remained open and during the early post-war period housed Nos. 12, 9, 101 Squadrons and the famous 617 Squadron, equipped with Lincolns. Since the latter part of the war a ghostly figure has been seen many times at the end of the main runway as dusk begins to fall.

All sightings report that it looks as if the ghost airman is frantically signalling to an aircraft that is waiting at the end of the runway; but there is no aircraft.

I am certain that the apparition is that of a wartime ground crew Sergeant, who had been in charge of an aircraft; and after the bomb-load had been loaded into the bomb-bay, the Sergeant had realized that the bombs had been armed when loaded into the bomber...
