The Ghosts of RAF Bircham Newton
Of all the 'ghostly airfields' RAF Bircham Newton must be about top of the 'ghost' league.
RAF Bircham Newton is situated on the north coast of Norfolk, not far from King's Lynn. It opened in 1916 and was a busy airfield throughout the First World War; but after the Armistice, there was a run down of units. However, Bircham Newton remained active between the wars, and during the expansion period of the 1930s, three 'C' type hangars were built to replace the old First World War ones.
In the early war years, the Coastal Command Station was operating old Wildebeest Torpedo Bombers, Avro Ansons, Blenheims, Wellingtons and Hudsons, mainly for anti-shipping operations. With being almost on the coast the station also housed No. 279 Air-Sea-Rescue Squadron with Hudsons.
The units on the station as at D-Day, 6 June, 1944, were 279 Squadron, with Hudsons, part of 415 (Royal Canadian Air Force) Squadron, with Wellingtons, and 695 Squadron, flying Henleys, Martinets and Hurricanes. Later in 1944 the Royal Navy arrived with Avengers.
During the war years many Canadian and Australian pilots were stationed at Bircham Newton. The station had a few command changes after the war, first Fighter, then Transport, and in October 1948, Technical Training Command took over the station.
Throughout the changes there were many ghostly happenings and many disturbing incidents that could not be explained. Many times a ghost car full of happy laughing airmen was sighted; it would race through the Station, and crash into the rear of a hangar.
Another story concerned the WAAF Block. A WAAF was said to have committed suicide in one of the rooms. On more than one occasion, it was reported that ghostly footsteps were heard going to that bed, the sound of the body being pulled out, and dragged out of the room and along the corridor.
