The Royal Flying Corps first occupied Montrose early in 1913, when No.2 Squadron, under the command of Major C. J. Burke, moved north from Farnborough.

The airfield was sited right on the coast and at the outbreak of war in 1914 it became a training station. Numerous reserve and training squadrons were located at the aerodrome at different periods; and Nos. 25 and 80 (Service) Squadrons were formed there.

In July 1918, the training squadrons at Montrose were formed into No. 32 Training Depot Station, which was used mainly for the instruction of fighter pilots. The station used a variety of aeroplanes, which included Sopwith Camels and Avro 504Ks. This training unit was disbanded on 30 May 1919, but the air station itself did not close down until a year later.

Throughout the First World War the Montrose ghost was on everyone's lips; and was investigated by the Society for Psychical Research. There are many stories; but my stories are most factual due to the depth of research; and my military contacts in high places, to open all doors for me.

One evening in the autumn of 1916, an officer who had been working late, was walking up the path to the Mess in the dark, when he saw an officer in flying kit in front of him. It was too dark to recognize him. The officer in flying kit went up to the door but did not open it. The other officer, on reaching the door, was surprised that the man he had seen in front of him was not there.

Thereafter, several other officers are said to have seen the same phantom figure at different points in and around the same quarters. It was also reported that during night guard duty some airmen had deserted their guard posts; but they were not charged, after it was said that the desertion had been caused by the sudden appearance of the ghost of Lieutenant Arthur ...
