The Phantoms of Tintwhistle Knarrs
In February 1995 I received a very interesting letter from Alan Jones of Stalybridge in Cheshire. It was an interesting letter for many reasons: one, it supported previous material in Ghost Stations™ and is as follows:
"In your last book you have a story concerning the Defiant night fighter which crashed on Near Bleaklow Stones near Woodhead," he said "I once met the two young men who say they saw a ghost at the site and as far as I know they are sensible lads."
And Alan Jones added: "As for myself, I have spent the last thirty years visiting over fifty crash sites in the Peak District, including the Defiant, on many occasions. I have to say that even in dense misty conditions I have never experienced anything supernatural.
"The heaviest loss of life occurred on a B29 crash at Shelf Stones just outside Glossops, where thirteen men died. My friends and I have spent hours at this site, often in dense low cloud but, have never seen anything out of the ordinary. This brings me to the reason for contacting you."

Despite visiting these crash sites nearly every week in the summer months, he also has seen nothing ghostly; that is, until one bright sunny day in 1994.
On this particular day Jim had climbed the hill via the Hurricanes crash site, then made his way to the Lockheed Lightning. Finding nothing of interest, he started back home, stopping for a few minutes at the Lancaster site on the brow of the hill. Here again, his search proved ...
