Ancient, small and medium sized towns in Germany were reduced to rubble and ashes; merely in order to intensify the chaos behind the lines.

As a general rule there was a great time lag between the destruction and the occupation which made the destruction appear wanton; for example, Heilbronn, which is featured in its own story, was destroyed on 4 - 5 December, 1944; but was not occupied until the beginning of April 1945.

As dawn broke on the morning of 21 March 1945, the people of Neckarsulm awoke to find that the war was only a few miles away; but at the Hotel Post, near the railway station, the town’s rich and beautiful are celebrating a wedding; and they are certainly not subject to strict war-time rationing for the wine and beer is flowing. While the kegs are rolling, the sirens start to wail. It is 1.30 p.m.

Is Neckarsulm to be the target for the bombers? With the sirens still sounding a Wehrmacht bus raced into the town and screeched to a stop. From the bus some captured American aircrew and their guards dashed for cover under a big chestnut tree in front of the Post Hotel.

In the group there is an Oberfeldwebel in charge of the old reservists. The Americans have an officer and at that period of the war the men were bound for Frankfurt, an interrogation and a short captivity.

Or were they? Several military personnel take cover along with the Americans; and from the other side of the railway line some workers scan the sky for the enemy bombers.
